Starting a business often requires more than a good idea — it requires the willingness to take a risk despite uncertainty. For Nicolás González, that decision came nearly 18 years ago when he and his wife, Francisca, purchased Spudnuts doughnut shop in El Dorado. She had worked there for years before the previous owner decided to retire.

Although Nicolás González had always dreamed of owning a small business, buying Spudnuts was intimidating. With no experience making doughnuts, he worried about whether he could successfully run the shop. Still, he decided to take the opportunity when the owner offered to sell him the business and help make the purchase possible.

Nicolás and Francisca González share how Spudnuts' long-standing success has earned them numerous honors and helped cement the legacy of this iconic El Dorado business.

“I was very scared,” González says. “But I wanted to learn and do it the best way possible. Little by little I learned, improved and we gained more customers.”

That learning process became one of the keys to preserving the quality products customers have come to expect. González says maintaining consistency every day is what keeps people returning, even after many years away. He recalls one customer whose wife became emotional after tasting the doughnuts because they brought back memories from decades earlier.

For González, customer loyalty is earned through consistency, patience and a willingness to improve. He acknowledges that mistakes were part of the learning curve, but says perseverance allowed the business to grow.

Even after nearly two decades of operating Spudnuts, González says he approaches future expansion with caution. Although customers often encourage him to open additional locations, he believes experience alone is not enough.

“I would still need advice from someone who knows more than I do,” González says. “If we expand, I want to make sure we do it the right way.”

For González, taking risks has never meant acting without preparation. Instead, it means having the courage to pursue an opportunity while recognizing that seeking guidance from experienced professionals is often one of the smartest business decisions an entrepreneur can make.
